The HiScores have been reworked multiple times, including on 21 November 2003 ( Update:Hiscores Reborn!), on 30 January 2006 ( Update:New Look Hiscores), and on 22 November 2011 ( Update:RuneScape Revolution). The Hiscores have also had the number of recorded players gradually increase over the years it was changed to a maximum of 500,000 on, a maximum of 1,000,000 on 25 August 2005, and finally a maximum of 2,000,000 on 9 July 2008. The HiScores table was updated weekly with players' ranks overall, levels, experience, and change in rank.

Prior to this, Andrew Gower would release a list of top players or update the server lists with the currently active top players. The original HiScores table was released on the 24th of November 2001. The new HiScore system was developed with the help of external companies. The dedicated and visually distinct subpage tracks the highest enrages in each of the available group sizes, from solo attempts to the 5 player goups. The release of the Zamorak, Lord of Chaos encounter on 4 July 2022 introduced the boss specific HiScores for the first time.

Seasonal HiScores were released along with RuneScape 3. The following table shows the current minimum levels for each skill to be ranked on the HiScores. In that case, a player must have enough experience in the skill such that they are in the top two million players. In order to appear in the HiScores, a player must have achieved level 15 in a skill, unless more than two million players are already ranked. Players who have been inactive for a long time may be removed from the HiScores.

Such accounts are removed from the HiScores but will reappear on the HiScores again after regaining access. The account must not be banned or locked.At least 1,000 experience points within the relevant time frame is required to appear in a weekly or monthly hiscore table.A minimum of 11,848 experience points is required to appear in the "Overall - All Time" table as of December 2020.They must have a minimum skill level of 15 in the skill (2,411 experience points).
